Eastwater: Testing Replayability in OT Battlegrounds
The same water process, with changing services, credentials and objectives.
The Eastwater replayability test shifts the focus from individual scenarios to the system behind each match. The goal is to make returning to the same environment useful without turning the exercise into a sequence participants can memorize.
Understand the network before completing the mission
The test configuration uses one flat network with more than 15 services, including five HMIs, five PLC endpoints, web services and file services. IP addresses, ports, credentials and objectives vary between runs.
Not every system participants discover is relevant to the mission. Finding an HMI does not mean finding the HMI connected to the process. Finding a PLC endpoint does not mean identifying the controller they need.
Participants must first understand the network, identify the systems involved in the water process and establish how they work together. Only then can they complete the mission.
The physical water process is simulated. Participants interact with running PLC and HMI software, rather than physical plant equipment.
Difficulty should change the work
Easy is intended to help participants understand the environment. Hard should require more investigation, verification and decisions before taking action.
The test examines whether randomization and difficulty settings support that difference. Returning participants should benefit from understanding the process, but should not already know every address, credential or objective.
The water process and flat-network structure remain familiar. The route through the challenge changes.
